JCPenney was founded in Kemmerer, Wyoming, in 1902 by James Cash Penney. The first store, named The Golden Rule, set the standard by which we have operated for over a century to treat others as we would like to be treated. Today, we operate approximately 875 locations across the United States and Puerto Rico and while fashion and shopping patterns have evolved, our focus on customer service remains unchanged.
As a company founded on the Golden Rule, we have a strong legacy of giving back to the communities in which we live and work. We believe in building strong, vibrant communities by supporting moms and what matters to them most. Thats why we are committed to investing our time, money and effort into causes and charities that help support her and her community. Through our non-profit organization, The JCPenney Foundation, we support organizations like the Y, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and After-School All-Stars, to serve the needs of underserved kids by providing clothing, youth opportunities and career readiness. Supporting the communities we serve goes well beyond philanthropic efforts it's also about making mindful decisions in all of our operations, whether in stores, supply chain, customer service centers or international offices. Today, as we invest in the future of our business, we remain committed to building on our legacy of responsible corporate citizenship by advancing social, environmental and ethical standards across our operations.
